My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

My Heart is a Chainsaw is almost like a novelized thesis paper on the slasher genre. Jade has almost encyclopedic knowledge of everything horror movie, and desperately believes that she wants to be a part of one. Throughout the book she educates us about every aspect of a good slasher movie.

Having had to watch many a horror movie myself (husband is a big fan), I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the novel where Jade was trying to decide exactly what kind of slasher movie her town of Proofrock is going to be.

For those who have come for the gore and chaotic killing spree of it all, you won’t get it until the very last part of the book really. But if you can get there, I promise you’ll be really satisfied.

Let me say that this is totally NOT my genre of book. If you have a weak stomach, you really need to sit this one out. I’m probably the exact opposite of many of the other readers of this book, I really enjoyed the slow paced first 3/4 of the book where we just get a whole lot of backstory and lessons about the horror movie genre. I wasn’t a huge fan of the killing stuff that everybody probably read this book for.

Having said that, the book is really well written, and an amazing concept, so I can’t really knock it down on stars just because it wasn’t my cup of tea. 🙂
